Discussion of the Doctoral Dissertation Entitled “Adaptation Systems in Activating Architectural Production”
On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the doctoral dissertation of researcher Amer Hussein Alwan, titled “Adaptation Systems in Activating Architectural Production”, was discussed.
The dissertation focused on adaptation systems as mechanisms capable of revitalizing architectural productions that fail to keep pace with their time due to future changes. These productions are considered passive, meaning that buildings remain in a state of inactivity, whether in terms of their elements or relationships, failing to fulfill their intended function or provide the desired benefits. Due to this inactivity, buildings require adaptive modifications to prevent deterioration and eventual extinction.
The dissertation aimed to identify the variables of adaptation systems in activating architectural production to create buildings that meet both human needs and environmental requirements. Additionally, it sought to provide a future vision for buildings with special values in the context of ongoing material and intellectual changes, ensuring a balanced adaptation to spatiotemporal transformations.
The research focused on key themes to extract knowledge related to adaptation and systems, including:
- Theories related to adaptation
- Factors influencing adaptation
- Levels of adaptation (material – intellectual)
- Formal and functional systems
- Methods of adaptation (transformation – renewal – expansion – flexibility as an attribute)
- Intermediate transformation (as a transitional stage)
- The balance between stability and change and between authenticity and modernity
- Existential potential and movement change
Through practical application, the dissertation proposed a future outlook for local buildings with significant values after testing the theoretical framework components for adapting formal and functional systems. It also reinforced conceptual aspects, making them more engaging for society by achieving a balance between preserving originality and keeping up with spatiotemporal changes.
