Discussion of the doctoral dissertation titled “The Attractive Environment in School Building Architecture.”
On Monday, December 30, 2024, the doctoral dissertation of researcher Adel Karim Hamel, titled “The Attractive Environment in School Building Architecture,” was discussed.
The dissertation introduced a new perspective on school spaces, particularly for primary education, by drawing inspiration from game designers’ strategies. It explored the possibility of integrating architecture and gaming, leveraging their relationship to create a stimulating architectural environment that enhances learning, influences user behavior, and makes school buildings and their spaces more engaging and enjoyable.
The study focused on the Gamification strategy, examining its various aspects, including theories, elements, objectives, and significance. It provided a comprehensive description of gamification as a design strategy that motivates learners by incorporating game design elements and principles into a non-gaming educational context, fostering an engaging and enjoyable learning environment.
The dissertation analyzed the components of games and the factors that make them appealing and enjoyable, emphasizing spatial, formal, and environmental characteristics and their impact on users. It aimed to utilize these insights to create educational spaces with design features that encourage student engagement and interaction within the architectural learning environment, fostering satisfaction and a desire to revisit the space, ultimately resulting in an attractive and learning-stimulating school building.
Additionally, the study assessed the current state of school building architecture at the local level, identifying the challenges faced by this type of infrastructure. It proposed a future vision for school architecture in Iraq, utilizing theoretical framework concepts and practical study findings to develop attractive school designs that enhance the educational process and align with the needs of modern educational practices.
